JULY 10-19: Aarhus Jazz Festival

Posted on July 6, 2009 - Filed Under "Preview"

Aarhus has got nine days of jazz festival coming. The whole city has jazz on every square in all shapes and sizes. And the venues and concert halls present more established international names as well as more progressive newcomers. You can check out the full programme at www.jazzfest.dk.

Among the bigger jazz names one should probably mention the Japanese-Danish constellation of Makiko Hirabayashi Trio featuring Marylin Mazur and Klavs Hovman.

Local organizers Sunship who have a tendency to sometimes present music from the jazzworld with a little more egde have three nights at the venue Musikcaféen on July 13th, 14th and 17th. The artists are Delirium, Hyperactive Kid, Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard and Jeppe Skjold (with guests), Dynamo featuring Peter Laugesen, Gramskibeat and Andersskove Accident. Go to www.musikcafeen.dk for more info on the artists.

From July 15th to 18th there are four days of new local Aarhus jazz talent playing at Lobby. A total of eight bands: Toldam/Rasmussen/Jochumsen, Jacob Danielsen 5, European Jazz Motion, Ørno, SJAK, Laser, Bang Bing Bum and Acid Plutonium.

On July 15th a host of local electronic artists will perform at Musikhuset. These are Kati Linek, B:L:V, Puzzleweazel, Caution! Art Kills!, Vectral, Virvar and Jonas Olesen.

The previous years Musikcaféen have been the home of the “festival-within-the-festival” Elektronisk Jazzjuice, but this is not the case this year. But fear not, this little progressive electronic/experimental festival has just moved to later in the year outside the Aarhus Jazz Festival. More precisely August 21st and 22nd.

VIDEO: Fossils

Aarhus duo Fossils played as part of the Arrogant Tour during the Spot Festival (but outside it). A fantastic gig which could easily prompt one to burst out that they are one of Aarhus’ best live bands. Judge for yourself… here’s some video from that gig.

VIDEO: Interview with Mads Stobberup (Klub Arrogant / Cola Freaks)

During the Spot Festival ‘århus:nu’ interviewed Mads Stobberup - the man behind the Arrogant Tour that rocked Aarhus outside the confines of the official festival. Mads also sings in the punk band Cola Freaks. Here he talks about what Klub Arrogant is and how and why they did the tour during the Spot Festival. He also encourages others to organize more shows.
The interview is in (unsubtitled) Danish.

JUNE 12: Wäldchengarten

Posted on June 11, 2009 - Filed Under "Preview"

artist-waldchengartenOnce based in Aarhus, but now relocated elsewhere, duo Wäldchengarten was most likely the sole reason that the noise genre found its way to the city some years ago with their Noisejihad label and concert activities under that monicker.
On June 12th they are back in town for a gig at Huset. A rare treat these days, it seems, so be there at 17.00 where it all starts according to the program.

JUN 11: Omar Souleyman + Group Doueh + Sublime Frequencies DJs

Posted on June 8, 2009 - Filed Under "Preview"

artist-omarsouleymanLJUD is at it again and this time they seem to have another scoop on their hands: Omar Souleyman and Group Doueh from the ultra-hip Sublime Frequencies label. In short… on June 11th Syria and the West Sahara meet at the Student House (a.k.a. Pakhuset). DJs from the label will be presenting more music that night as well. What’s to say? Apparently Omar is a bit of a legend where he comes from. What the hell do we know? Well, from listening we’ll know that this will be one of those memorable nights that you really don’t want to miss.
The beats are gonna come fast and the singing is going to be out of this world (or this part of the world for sure) from Omar and his crew.
Group Doueh seems to be of a more mellow sort, but still sounds like a rather exciting and intense experience with emphasis on guitar and rhythms.
In any case, it’s gonna be wicked.

JUNE 10: Black Lips + Cola Freaks + Thee Vicars

Posted on June 8, 2009 - Filed Under "Preview"

artist-blacklipsKlub Arrogant is back again on June 10th with a night that will most likely rock your socks off. American band Black Lips is headlining, while local act Cola Freaks and British band Thee Vicars join the fun as support acts. If all the previous nights by Klub Arrogant are anything to go by (and of course they are!) this will be no bullshit rock and punk music straight from the underground. Lots of energy and intensity. So better get down to the Musikcaféen Wednesday, right?

JUNE 9: Ariel Pink + Bird By Snow

Posted on June 8, 2009 - Filed Under "Preview"

artist-arielpinkTuesday night (June 9th) eclectic American lo-fi outfit Ariel Pink visits Musikcaféen. With one foot in some 70’s dream about David Bowie and those kinda folk and one foot in a box of badly erased cassette tapes he makes his very own sort of pop songs. Should be an interesting night. Have a listen at MySpace.
Support act is Bird By Snow - also from the USA - who apparently is part of the “New Weird America” wave with it’s somewhat psychedelic “free folk” using drone sounds and such.
The show is organized by LJUD.

VIDEO: KURvE

Posted on June 3, 2009 - Filed Under "Video"

Saturday the 30th of May local balkanpunk band KURvE played a great gig at Teater Katapult. The place was packed with people and steaming from all the jumping around and dancing. ‘århus:nu’ was there to film what was going on. So here’s a little video featuring three songs - the last one with KURvE’s bassplayer all of a sudden giving up his “weapon” and just jumping into the crowd to join the dancing. Who can blame him?

JUN 4: CocoRosie

Posted on June 1, 2009 - Filed Under "Preview"

artist-cocorosieThis Thursday (June 4th) Misk Mask presents American duo CocoRosie at Train. The two sisters have internationally been an integral part of the “freak folk” genre, although adding less traditional elements than most to their very personal take on music. With vocals ranging from purring to operatic alongside noisemaking toys and human beatboxing they will undoubtedly deliver exciting night.
