OCT 15: Singvogel + Vialka + Jesus Feat. + Paragrafph
Posted on October 6, 2009 - Filed Under "Preview"
Local band Singvogel is doing a tour of various venues around Denmark this month. They start out in Aarhus at Lobby (next to Musikshuset) on October 15th. This they do with fellow Aarhusians Jesus Feat., Copenhagen act Paragrafph and the amazing French/Canadian duo Vialka.
Vialka have played in Aarhus before and with the duo’s fastpaced and Balkan-influenced drums ang guitar combo they turned quite a few heads. Now they’re back, so don’t hesitate to drop by. Read more at www.vialka.com.
Those who have seen and heard Singvogel before know that they are not your run-of-the-mill normal rockband. With their drums and guitar in company of clarinets, old analogue synth, brass and accordion you know you’re in for a ride out of the ordinary. Their dark, twisted and oddly adventurous lyrics in Danish is the icing on the cake.

OCT 10: Ebola + Toxic Chicken
Posted on October 5, 2009 - Filed Under "Preview"
The organizers of Prototybe is putting on another night of hardhitting electronic music on October 10th at Musikcaféen. Plenty of drum’n'bass and dubstep to go around to the sweaty masses when Ebola and Toxic Chicken - both from the UK - start the party. The latter is also a video artist so there will most likely also be something to feast your eyes on. DJs Iwana (from Norway) and Noia Niz (from Aarhus) will keep things going when the main acts are off the stage.

Kazuhisa Uchihashi is one of the great innovative Japanese improv guitarists and is sure to bring wonder to the night at Musikcaféen.
Aalborg-band Dust Bugs end the night with a their dirty rock’n'roll.

AUG 28 - SEP 5: Frankenhavn - den glemte knejpe
Posted on August 27, 2009 - Filed Under "Preview"
If one goes off the beaten path during the coming Aarhus Festival it’s possible that one will come across the Frankenhavn (Frankenharbour). A mytholical place in the docks of Aarhus forgotten by time and most people. A place where the dark ambience of the industrial harbour mixes with music inspired by the setting.
In previous years local band Singvogel have been doing shows in a shaky wooden construction called Rumstativ. This year they have taken their maritime mythos indoors at Spanien 19 C (right behind the Skousen shop close to the crossing street Jægergårdsgade. Actually the address seems to be Kalkværksvej 5 despite the name of the place).
It goes on for several days. From August 28th (21.00) to September 5th (02.00). The bar with inexpensive beer etc. on the menu is open from 12.00 to 17.00 every day. At night the music starts at 21.00.
The musicians of the ‘Frankenhavn’ house band called Fyrpasserne (The Lighthouse Attenders?) have gathered from the beatgroup Singvogel, doomband Sol and freejazz ensemble Square Music - as well as Leonard Davies from Fallen Men. They despense they sailor attitudes and moral decay on the 28th, 29th, 3rd, 4th and 5th.
On September 4th there will be an extra artist on the program: I Like This Wind.
Check the full program and more info at www.frankenhavn.dk.
AUG 28-SEP 6: Aarhus Festival
Posted on August 24, 2009 - Filed Under "Preview"
It’s time for the annual Aarhus Festival (a.k.a. Århus Festuge). More than a week of music, theatre, film and partying that takes over most of the city. So if you spot one or two - or a thousand - more drunk people in the streets than usual, then you know why.
There’s so much going on that it would be impossible to list it here. Visit the festival site at www.aarhusfestuge.dk for the full info.
Still, we can mention a few. Present Aarhus puts both indie rock and mainstream dance music from the 90s (why, oh why?) on stage. Maybe more interesting is the fact that there’s a dubstep night featuring Benga amongst others. Mikael Simpson and Bikstok Røgsystem also plays. Check out the program stretching from August 27th to September 5th at www.presentaarhus.com.
On August 30th and September 1st The Desoto Cause is hosting two nights called “The Medium-Rare Sessions” featuring various guests: Isobel Campbell, Howe Gelb, C.V. Jørgensen, Josh Rouse, Sarah Blasko and more. Read more here.
On September 2nd Musikhuset in Aarhus opens it’s doors to 24 hours of jazz. Yes, it’s true! A whole day and night. And it’s all called “Fremtiden er jazz” (the future is jazz). Sounds cool… if it wasn’t for the fact that the day is a friggin’ Wednesday so regular working Joes will have to miss out on the most exciting acts in order to stay awake on the job the next day (thanks, organizers!). But if you’re not tied down by a dayjob like most people there’s Wildbirds & Peacedrums and the magnificent folks of Yoyooyoy at 2.00 and 5.00 o’clock respectively. Earlier in the evening Jomi Massage is playing, though. Read more here.
And there’s more, of course. Go check out the festival site.
AUG 21-22: Elektronisk Jazzjuice
Posted on August 17, 2009 - Filed Under "Preview, Release"
It’s called “electronic jazzjuice” and for all we know it could contain all of that. But it most certainly does contain much, much more of that.
Easily one of Denmark’s best festivals it has this year moved from its regular spot during the mid-summer jazzfestival in Aarhus to its own weekend in August.
This weekend - August 21st and 22nd - you’ll get another two days for the curious soul with a wide range of genres, tempos and moods at the venues Musikcaféen and Gyngen.
To name a bit of what’s gonna happen you’ll get: acid mastery from Ceephax, drum mayhem from Senju Muneoni of Japanese cult supergroup Boredoms, freejazz drum madness from Flower Corsano Duo (Björk-collaborator on her “Volta”-album) and melodic Copenhagener playfullness from Frisk Frugt of the Yoyo Oyoy-collective. And that just to mention a few.
Elektronisk Jazzjuice is the place for lots of wonderful surprises. So don’t hesitate… just get down there!
Visit the Elektronisk Jazzjuice MySpace page for more info or the Musikcaféen website.
If you want an idea about the scope and range of this magnificent festival in the heart of Aarhus watch this video ‘medley’ of last year’s festival.
