Site going on a hiatus

The official www.aarhus-nu.dk website has been closed down and moved to www.larsdideriksen.com/aarhusnu. Mostly as an archive as I don’t expect to post more news here. It simply takes too much time away from other things I’d rather do. So århus:nu is on hiatus, as of now, and I don’t have any plans at the present time for it to continue.

Nevertheless:

On Facebook there’s still the århus:nu group where I sometimes send out a message if something interesting pops up on the Aarhus music scene. So if you still want a bit of news of the århus:nu kind stay in that group or join it, if you haven’t already.

I’ll still try and sort out my many videos of live music as I go through the archive. Some of them will probably be uploaded on YouTube and Vimeo in the future. So far I’ve gathered my live videos on one page on my personal website (here) - which also includes a lot of videos not filmed directly for århus:nu. Plenty to dig into already at this point .

Also: If you want to buy a copy of the ‘århus:nu’ book and cd send an e-mail to lsd_dk [@] hotmail [.] com. There are still a few copies left and it’s only 40 DKK plus shipping.

Now I will limit my online activities to my record label Sound Of Perpetual Astonishment (SOPA) and the Under Byen ‘Fansite’. I will most likely also continue writing things on my blog ‘Støj på overfladen‘ now and then
I do expect to film more live music. Mostly for my own amusement, but these will most likely find their way online, as I like to share these things.

NOV 20: Marzipan Marzipan + Sister Chain & Brother John + A.K. Hansn + Agata & Me

On Friday November 20th local record label Sound Of Perpetual Astonishment (SOPA) presents an evening with four very different live acts at the Aarhus Art Academy in Vestergade 29 (right opposite Café Vestergade - and not to be confused with the art academy in Mejlgade). The line-up for the evening is:
Berlin-based Italian musician Marzipan Marzipan play utterly charming tunes about travelling, life in the city and love. Using an old Italian 60s guitar, a drum machine, a loop-pedal and a toy-keyboard she works her unique lo-fi magic. With three weeks on the Danish indie chart Det Elektriske Barometer and great reviews of her cd she has already made a little name for herself in Denmark despite only playing here a few times.
Sister Chain & Brother John is a duo also hailing from Berlin. With just vocals and distorted guitar or bass they play what they themselves have dubbed “parlour punk”. Plenty of attitude and hooks judging from their album “Darkness To Warm Your Heart”.
A.K. Hansn & The Five Orange Pips is a trip down in the underbelly of Aarhus. Tall tales and stranges character populate the universe of A.K. Hansn who you may already know from the band Singvogel - and years ago Vildensky. In his own name he moves more into ’spoken word’ territory, though still with music playing an important part.
Agata & Me is a Bosnian-Sicilian duo based in Aarhus who use guitars, keyboards and electronics. Harmonious voices mix with jittery beats and create beautiful melancholic songs. The duo has toured in Italy, Germany and Ireland. Tyskland og Irland. The duo’s Bosnian half, Emir Pasic, also plays in the Aarhusian balkanpunk band KURvE.
When the live acts are not playing the two DJs Zelda Panda (Berlin) and Capt. Daydream (Aarhus) will play records.

NOV 15: Gare Sazkar + Memet Hanifi Kekani

One of the newer concepts at Musikcaféen is called [REAL] and it’s goal is to bring forward local talent that otherwise might stay unnoticed.
On Sunday November 15th you can get a taste of Kurdish music from Gere Sazkar and Memet Hanifi Kekani. Both are internationally know Aarhusians, but are not as wellknown locally in Aarhus or Denmark. Both play the saz and sing. At this concert they will play both traditional Kurdish songs as well as their own original material.
Please note that it’s a Sunday afternoon concert and doors open at 14.00. You can read more about [REAL] here.

NOV 21: Aloop + Mudslide + Inbreeding Rednecks

The monthly metal club called Club Brutal is at it again at Musikcaféen. Three Danish acts are on stage November 21st: Aloop, Mudslide and Inbreeding Rednecks. According to the description on the venue website Aloop moves in trash- and Sepultura-territory. DJ Bager is once again behind the decks with undoubtedly a rocking selection or two. Doors open at 20.30.

NOV 6: Bushman’s Revenge + Lord Kelvin

LJUD invites everyone for an intense night at Lobby with new ways of doing jazz and the like. On stage is Bushman’s Revenge (released on Norwegian Rune Grammofon record label) and Lord Kelvin.
About Bushman’s Revenge it is written: “The power trio is rock’s most malleable form. It can run the gamut of rock’s emotions, from a three minute pop song to a freeform freakout, as practitioners like The Jimi Hendrix Experience proved. Norwegian trio Bushman’s Revenge have taken the blueprint and reinvented it with previous unconnected sources. The free jazz of Ornette Coleman (who always slung his horn like a guitar anyway) is wedded to the heavy sludge of stoner rock.”
Sounds like an exciting moutful of everything. It’s at Lobby and doors open at 20.30.

NOV 12: Giant Sand

On November 12 Voxhall opens its doors for the originators of socalled “desert rock”: Giant Sand. So if you want to get well dusted drop by for a most likely playful night with Howe Gelb and his band. Four people which by now have a special relationship with Aarhus having met there, recorded and played live on numourus occations.

OCT 31: Balkan Express 2 featuring KURvE + Blue Shadow Caravan

It’s time for another ride with the Balkan Express! This Saturday (the 31st) at Trøjborg Beboerhus Aarhus-based balkanpunk band KURvE is back once more to set fire to people’s feet and hearts.
This they do together with ‘gypsy soul’ band Blue Shadow Caravan and DJ Subs (exposing everyone to the sounds of the ex-Jugoslavian underground).
Before all the live music the movie ” Ko To Tamo Peva” (Who’s That Singing Over There) will be shown. Plenty of pitchblack humour - and with English subtitles. Be there around 20.00 to get it all.

OCT 31: Kitty DeVille Dance Club - Halloween Nightmare

Once again the Kitty DeVille Dance Club is back. And once more at Pakhuset (The Student House) on the harbour. These folks will never let a good theme for a night out pass them by, so of course it’s time for: Kitty DeVilles Halloween Nightmare!
It all starts at 20.00 with a “zombie horror surprise”, they say.
Johnny Nightmare will deliver an unhealthy dose of rockabilly/psychobilly from the stage and local surfband Surfing Henchmen will also be playing. DJs are DJ Boppin Sonny and DJ SteenR.
It’s a night for dressing up in your best and spookiest outfit. So don’t be late in following their suggestion: Be there - or be dead!

OCT 30-31: RECession Festival

Now it’s that time again of the year where the annual RECession Festival is going on. Two days from October 30th to 31st. This year it’s moving even more into IDM/industrial territory than previous years. Darker stuff, yep. Front 242, Leæther Strip, Mnemic and As We Fight are among the acts playing. Most interestly the festival also features a church concert by Martin Hall. Check out the full program at www.recession.dk.

OCT 30: Mark Eitzel + Franz Nikolay

Mark Eitzel of the band American Music Club is playing this Friday (the 30th) at Musikcaféen. Classic, semi-soothing songwriting. This evening he will have a pianist along for the performence. Mark Eitzel will be supported by Franz Nikolay (of The Hold Stady).
